Student Commencement speakers named

San Francisco State University selected Angela Torres, a Graduate College of Education student earning her MA in Education: Secondary Education, to be the hood recipient at the university’s commencement. She will be hooded on stage, on behalf of all graduate students at SF State, and address 8,400 graduates at AT&T Park.

Angela taught high school mathematics for ten years before taking a leadership role in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) math department. She has been instrumental in the district’s efforts to reform the teaching and learning of mathematics. She is part of the core team to lead professional development for SFUSD middle and high school teachers, who transitioned to the new Common Core State Standards in mathematics. Angela has expertise in Complex Instruction, which focuses on equitable student participation in "group worthy" tasks. Angela’s MA field study examined the value of reflecting on videotapes of classroom practice together with teachers.
