Integrated Teacher Education Programs (ITEPs)
The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) at San Francisco State University (SFSU) lets future teachers earn a Bachelor’s degree and teaching credential in just four years. It blends coursework with hands-on experience, preparing students to work with diverse learners and succeed as teachers.
Programs
Early Childhood Special Education Teacher (Birth through Kindergarten)
By completing the Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Studies: Concentration in Special Education ITEP, you will graduate with both a BA and a preliminary Education Specialist in Early Childhood Special Education Credential. The program is designed to prepare professional educators to provide quality early intervention and early childhood special education to young children birth through kindergarten.

Elementary School Teacher (Preschool through 3rd Grade)
By completing the Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Studies: Concentration in PK-3 ITEP, you will graduate with both a BA and a preliminary PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist Instruction Credential. The program is designed to support you as you develop knowledge and understanding of child development and learning in children from preschool through third grade. This knowledge will prepare you to implement effective teaching practices in preschool (PK) to 3rd grade classrooms in culturally and linguistically diverse schools.

Elementary School Teacher (Kindergarten through 6th Grade)
By completing the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies ITEP, you will graduate with both a BA and a preliminary Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential with the additional option of completing a Bilingual Authorization for the state of California. Through this program, you will learn to teach in self-contained classrooms, usually in grades K-6. The program prepares teachers to work effectively in multilingual, racially, and culturally diverse classrooms in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

Physical Education (P.E.) Teacher (Kindergarten through 12th Grade)
By completing the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology: Concentration in Integrated Teacher Education Program in Physical Education, you will graduate with both a BS and a preliminary Single-Subject Credential. Through this program, you will learn how to teach physical education in public and private K-12 schools. The emphasis on pedagogical knowledge during the early field experience, pre-service, and in-service teaching experience provides the learning environment for teachers to develop the necessary skills to educate a diverse student population to be physically educated individuals for lifelong physical activity.

Requirements

Current SFSU Students: Request to change your major in your Student Center
- Grade Point Average (GPA): Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50, or 2.75 in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units
- Orientation:
- Attend a mandatory ITEP orientation (visit the GCOE Events website for dates and registration)
- Attend the mandatory ITEP orientation after being admitted to an SFSU ITEP, see admissions section above, and before submitting your credential course prerequisites checklist
- Deadline:
- March 15th
- Must submit at least one semester before starting credential level coursework
- Submission:
- Submit your materials through Cal State Apply
- Application fee is waived
- When completing your “Extended Profile,”
- Select “Teaching and Service Credential”
- Select “No” for the question about if you are a “returning student”
- Select “Add Program”
- Enter the invitation code (a special code given to you after you attend an ITEP orientation)
- Select the “Undergraduate Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP)”
- In the “My Application” section, you will need to complete all four quadrants
- You can opt out of adding any standardized tests and experiences
- “Program Materials” is where all required documents are uploaded under the “Documents” section

- Statement of Purpose:
- Write an essay 500-750 words in length (1-3 pages double spaced)
- Address the following questions when formulating your essay:
- Why do you want to be a teacher?
- What experiences have prepared you to teach in a racially and linguistically diverse, urban setting?
- What personal qualities do you possess and what experiences have you had that prepared you to work in a collaborative environment?
- Resume:
- You may include information about your academic, employment, and volunteer experiences that are pertinent to your application and program objective.

- Proof of Early Field Experience:
- 20 hours working with children or youth in some capacity:
- Early Childhood Special Education
- PK-3 ECE: Field Experience Form
- Multiple Subjects: Field Experience Form
- P.E. Single Subject: Field Experience Form
- 20 hours working with children or youth in some capacity:
- Two Letters of Recommendation:
- Request letters of recommendation (on letterhead) from at least two people who know you in an academic or professional capacity.
- One letter must verify Early Field Experience.
- Letters should address the applicant’s character, aptitude for teaching, work ethic, or academic ability, etc.
- Additional letters will also be accepted to augment the application.
- Please advise letter writers that they will be invited via the Cal State Recommendation portal (Liaison) to upload letters
- Letters from relatives and letters more than five years old will not be accepted.
- Tuberculosis (TB) Test:
- TB test verification should be a photocopy of a note or card from a doctor.
- A negative skin test, blood test or a clear chest x-ray is acceptable.
- Verification should be valid at the time of application and while in the program.
- The term of validity from the time you took for a negative skin/blood test is four years and five years for the clear chest x-ray.
- Certificate of Clearance: required before student teaching/field work. Please view the guide on how to complete your Certificate of Clearance.
- Subject Matter Competency and Basic Skills Requirement: Automatically fulfilled through coursework and degree completion in the ITEP pathway.
- Interview: Following initial screening and review of ITEP students’ submission of credential pre-requisites through Cal State Apply, interviews will be conducted by faculty selection committees to assess students’ communication skills and behaviors required to meet professional standards. Additional information may also be considered to assess the applicant’s professional qualities including test results, previous experience, and observations in coursework/fieldwork.
- Complete all bachelor's degree requirements and apply for graduation
- All credential courses must be completed with a letter grade of B- or higher (CR grading is only acceptable for specific credential courses that only have a CR/NC grading option)
- All major courses (non-credential courses) must be completed with a letter grade of C or higher (C- or CR grading is not accepted)
- CPR Course for Infants, Children and Adults
- Passage of a Commission-approved Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA)
- Credential specific requirements:
- Early Childhood Special Education: Complete the Department of Special Education’s free Health Education module
