The Fall 2024 scholarship application cycle will run from September 2 through November 10.

Scholarships for Educators

The scholarships offered by the Graduate College of Education are open to all students in the graduate college.  Please note that these are all potential scholarships displayed, however, the scholarships listed in the flyers below reflect the most current opportunities available.

Chris Larsen Scholarship Fund $2,500 Fall and Spring To provide financial assistance in programs at SFSU which lead to a teaching, specialist, or service credential. Current and prospective students in the following Master’s degree concentrations are also eligible to apply. Credential or MA student in GCOE.
Crumpton, Baxter, Bonham Memorial Scholarship varies Fall and Spring To provide assistance to students in Education programs at SFSU which lead to a teaching, specialist, or service credential. Degree concentrations eligible to apply: Elementary Education, Language & Literacy, Math Education, Early Childhood Education, Adult Education, Secondary Education, Equity and Social Justice, Special Interest, Ed Admin, Instructional Technologies, Jt. Doc in SPED, Special Education, Communicative Disorders, EDD in Educational Leadership.
Irvin W. and Velma C. Hartman Family Scholarship $2,000 Fall To provide for graduate and credential student scholarships in the Graduate College of Education (GCOE) at San Francisco State University. Preference given to students who plan to pursue a teaching career.
Karl Richard Lane Scholarship $4,000 Fall and Spring Provide financial assistance to teacher credential candidates and MA candidates in the College of Education.  
The Golden State Teacher Grant Program      

The Golden State Teacher Grant Program (GSTG) awards up to $20,000 to students currently enrolled in a professional preparation program approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and working towards earning their preliminary teaching or pupil personnel services credential.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant      

The TEACH Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students who are completing or plan to complete course work needed to begin a career in teaching. A Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is different from other federal student grants because it requires you agree to complete a teaching service obligation as a condition for receiving the grant, and if you don't complete the service obligation, the TEACH Grant will be converted to a loan that you must repay, with interest.

Teacher Education (EED/SED/SPED) Scholarships

Alexandra Laboutin Bannon Scholarship varies Fall To provide financial support to students in the Departments of Elementary or Secondary Education who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. Preference will be given to applicants who exemplify a passion for teaching and education.
  • Apply upon recommendation by faculty from Elementary or Secondary Education.
  • Financial need determined by written statement.
  • Statement describing interest and goals in the field of education.
Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship     To promote the advancement of Education by providing scholarships to selected students who plan to become teachers in our California schools. Credential students are eligible to apply. Students who will be student teaching during the Spring semester.
Bower Friend Scholarship $2,500 Fall To provide 2 scholarships for students in the Graduate College of Education’s teacher credential programs. Students in Multiple, Single or Education Specialist Credential programs may apply. Half-time enrollment required.
Donna J. Cuneo Memorial Scholarship $500 Fall and Spring To support teaching credential candidates in Elementary, Secondary, and/or Special education. Must identify teaching goals.
George Moscone Scholarship $1,500 Fall and Spring To assist needy students in the School of Education pursuing a career in teaching Creative Arts.
  • Must plan to teach in creative arts or preference to those who will teach creative arts.
  • Financial need.

Educational Leadership Doctoral Program Scholarships

The EdD In Educational Leadership Program Scholarship varies Academic Year The intent of this scholarship is to provide support for emerging and innovative scholar-practitioners focused on social justice.
  • This scholarship is available only to doctoral students enrolled full time in SF States' EdD in Educational Leadership program.
  • Applications will be evaluated on the basis of three criteria:
    • Significance of the work on a current policy or program.
    • Expected or accomplished impacts on equity and social justice reforms.
    • Clarity of achieved project.
Vanson Nguyen Scholarship up to $3,000 Fall To provide an annual award to a student in the Graduate College of Education Educational Doctorate Program who is currently enrolled and has demonstrated financial need substantiated by written statement; preference to candidates who also demonstrate they work/worked with marginalized populations or program candidate whose research involves critical perspectives.
  • Financial need substantiated via written statement.
  • Preference given to: a. candidates who work/worked with marginalized populations b. candidates whose research involves critical perspectives.

Elementary Education Scholarships

The Cahill Scholarship amount equal to half-time or full-time enrollment Fall and Spring To provide assistance to students pursuing a degree in Elementary Education or undergraduate and credential students with a goal of becoming elementary school teachers. Students must be enrolled half-time or full-time in order to receive this scholarship. Half-time enrollment for Credential = 6 units/ MA = 4 units; Full-time enrollment for Credential = 12 units/ MA = 8 units. Preference given to students from single parent families.
Elementary Education Scholarship Fund $1,500 Fall and Spring To provide assistance to students pursuing a degree in Elementary Education or undergraduate and credential students with a goal of becoming elementary school teachers. Edith P. Merritt Memorial Endowed Scholarship varies Fall and Spring Scholarship endowment seeks to preserve and celebrate Edith Merritt’s legacy of promoting teacher education and the next generation of elementary education teachers by supporting students in credential and master’s degree programs in the Department of Elementary Education. Student must be at least one semester in to a Masters or Credential program in the Department of Elementary Education.
Margaret Lynch Memorial Scholarship $500 Spring For students with a commitment to a profession relating to reading. Commitment to profession related to the teaching of reading.
Masters in Early Childhood Education Scholarship varies Fall To provide an annual award to GCOE students who are enrolled in the MA program in Early Childhood Education.

Special Education Scholarships

Dominic C. Nosenzo Special Education Scholarship $2,500 Fall and Spring To provide financial assistance to credential, Masters and Doctoral students entering or continuing in the field of Special Education.  
Dorothy B. Lucas Special Education Scholarship $2,500 Fall and Spring To support students enrolled in special education programs. Classified in Education Specialist Credential or Special Education graduate program.
Dorothy Misbach Fund for Visually Impaired Teacher Preparation $1,000 or $2,000 Fall and Spring Financial support for students admitted to, and enrolled in, the Education Specialist Credential for Visual Impairments, and for Joint Doctoral, Ph.D. candidates, studying in the area of visual impairments. Ph.D. Joint Doctoral Program students studying in the Visual Impairment area are eligible to apply. To continue receiving an award in semesters 2-4, student must demonstrate a gpa of 3.5. California residency.
Early Childhood Special Education Scholarship $2,500 Fall and Spring To provide financial support for students admitted to, and enrolled in, the Education Specialist Credential for Early Childhood Special Education, and for Joint Doctoral, Ph.D. candidates, studying in the area of Early Childhood Special Education.
  • Admitted to, or enrolled in the Education Specialist Credential for Early Childhood Special Education or the Joint Doctoral, Ph.D. candidates, studying in the area of Early Childhood Special Education
  • Financial need determined by written statement
  • Preference given to candidates who work/worked with marginalized populations and demonstrates a commitment to equitable and inclusive learning environments
Flora R. Walter Scholarship $2,200 Fall and Spring To support students in the Department of Special Education, including Credential, MA, and Joint Doctoral Program. Evidence of academic distinction or financial need based on personal statement.
Friends of Teachers VI & O&M varies Fall and Spring To provide financial support to students currently enrolled in either the program in Visual Impairments (TVI) or program in Orientation and Mobility (O&M).  
Louise M. Mangini Scholarship varies Fall and Spring To support scholarships for students enrolled in Special Education with priority given to those pursuing the MA in Education, Special Education in any emphasis.  
Jane Wheeler-Dubin Memorial Scholarship $1000 Spring Annual scholarship for graduate students (credential, MA, or doctorate) in Special Education Department. Preference given to students working with individuals with Spina Bifida or other physical ailments. Student must be student teaching semester of award. Students must have financial need; have a gpa 3.5 or greater.
Mabel Whitehead Special Education Scholarship varies Fall and Spring Award is provided to pay for educational expenses, to students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Special Education. Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated strong overall goals for success in the program, and excellence of achievement from letters. Financial need is not a primary factor.
Susan J. Cady Scholarship $2,000 Spring Assist promising students in the College of Education who are working toward achieving their teaching credential in Special Education, specializing in moderate to severe disabilities, or severe disabilities, and; during the semester of student teaching. Must have a credential objective or emphasis in moderate to severe or severely handicapped. Preparing to enter semester of student teaching.
Special Education Scholarship Fund $1,000 Fall and Spring    
Transcribing Mariners Scholarship for Teachers of the Visually Impaired HT/FT Tuition Fall and Spring To provide a scholarship award to one graduate or doctoral student and one credential student from the Department of Special Education.  
Hall Family Scholarship varies Spring To provide financial support to students in the Department of Special Education and the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences.

Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Scholarships

Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Scholarship $1,000 Fall and Spring To provide assistance to students in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. Funds to be awarded as scholarships to assist students with educational expenses or to fund attendance at annual Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences Conferences to present student research.
  • Graduate students must be attending and presenting at a conference, or writing a thesis.
  • Undergraduate students must be attending professional conference.
  • Students must have a 3.7 GPA.
  • Students must submit an essay of no more than 500 words explaining why they are applying for the scholarship.
