A WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR

Nathan T. Avani, Ph.D.

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Secondary Education, welcome to our Department web site. As you browse through the various links I am confident you will find information about our single subject credential program and about our MA degree in Secondary Education.

This credential authorizes the holder to teach specified subject matter courses in departmentalized classrooms, grades pre-school through twelve or in classes for adults. Departmentalized classes exist most commonly in California junior and senior high schools.

Candidates must demonstrate competence in an approved single subject. All candidates must meet with the appropriate department major advisor regarding subject matter competency assessment before starting the credential program.

A unique quality about our program that contributes to the excellence and effectiveness of our program for candidates is our cohort model. Candidates inter a cohort with a professor who stays with the cohort until credential completion. This professor and the candidate get to know one another very well and this “mentor” type relationship becomes very supportive for the candidate. The faculty in the Department of Secondary Education is dedicated to the preparation of competent and caring educators.
