Overview of Ed.D. in Educational Leadership

The demand for educational leaders trained at the doctoral level who can take California’s public elementary and secondary schools and community colleges into the future has far outstripped the state’s ability to produce them. Given the increasingly complex challenges facing California educators now and in the future, the California State University and San Francisco State University have made the preparation of educational leaders a top priority by offering this new doctorate (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership.

Areas of specialization within the program are:

This Ed.D program is designed for working adults. Students will be admitted in cohorts, attend part-time, and complete the program in three years. The cohorted plan will allow students to learn from faculty who are leaders in preparing higher education administrators, and to develop strong connections with other educators who are actively engaged in educational administration or who are developing skills as educational leaders. The dissertation will be structured to allow students to engage in independent research that will provide an effective basis for their work as administrators and educational leaders.

Admission Requirements and Application Process

An important strength of the program is its multidisciplinary collaboration among several Colleges at the university, along with community partners. The program draws upon faculty expertise in education, ethnic studies, management, public administration, and behavioral and health disciplines to provide students with the broad skills and perspectives necessary to be effective, collaborative educational leaders.

Curriculum and Program Design

Our faculty members, who are nationally recognized teachers, researchers and practitioners, will emphasize the integration of educational theory and practice, communication skills, and problem-solving capability in an applied learning context to prepare education leaders to work in diverse environments while earning the respect of practitioners currently in leadership roles. Classes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays (with some online instruction) during fall and spring semesters and during two week-long sessions during the summers.
