Unique Curriculum Focus

Developed in consultation with P-12 and community partners and based on best practices, the program includes coursework and field experiences that prepare students to understand and respond effectively to the complexities of leading schools and colleges in California’s diverse communities. The curriculum includes courses on transformational leadership and change agent skills as well as courses on budgeting and financial management, human resources, and organizational theory.

The program is unique in its emphasis on instructional leadership and its perspective that all leaders are responsible for advancing the primary purpose of schools – effective teaching and learning for all students. The program faculty strongly believe that leaders must know how to bring the latest and most advanced curricular approaches to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse and low-income students.

The curriculum departs from more traditional programs in Educational Leadership in its emphasis on educational equity, the needs of diverse learners, the politics of education, and communication skills.

The program is also unique in teaching research skills in the context of problem solving in five content courses. Integrating research methodology and other content, as opposed to teaching research in self-contained methods courses, better reflects how leaders use data in the real world.
