Course Descriptions by Curriculum Category

 

 


 

Category 1: Leadership and Systemic Reform (total 3 classes—9 units)

 

EDDL 910: Transformational Leadership and Coalition Building (3 units)

 

Reviews research about leadership, with an emphasis on transformational leadership, creation and implementation of a vision; develops skills in how to identify, interact, and mobilize key community organizations and constituents with an emphasis on board relations. Will include examples of and introduction to important leaders in the field.

 

EDDL 911: Organizational Behavior, Change, and Systemic Reform (3 units)

 

Presents key constructs from organizational theory that are critical to understanding, analyzing, and implementing organizational and systemic reform; discusses key measures of accountability used in California; provides case studies of district and college systemic reform efforts.

 

 

EDDL 912: Advanced Educational Leadership Seminar

 

Advanced Educational Leadership Seminar Capstone course in Ed.D. program. Addresses key educational challenges embedded in high-level educational leadership positions through close interaction with regional educational leaders. Participants develop and present dissertation prospectuses to panels of local educational leaders.

Category 2: Learning, Curriculum, and Assessment (total 4 classes—12 units)

 

EDDL 920: Developing Academic Skills of English Language Learners (3 units)

 

Reviews recent research on best practices for developing the academic skills of English Language Learners, K-adult; includes curriculum and instruction issues at the administrative level, supervision of instruction and teacher evaluation, and approaches for implementing best practices.

 

 

EDDL 921: Mathematics, Science, and Literacy (3 units)

 

Reviews research that K-12 and community college administrators need to know to implement best practices in the teaching of mathematics, science, and literacy for all students; surveys curricular theories and practices; reviews widely-used curricula; critically analyses research on effective practices. (Note: Course will be taught on a modular basis with multiple instructors.)

 

 

EDDL 922: Advanced Pedagogical Strategies for Achieving Equity (3 units)

 

Presents research and examples of advanced instructional strategies that stimulate the cognitive and academic development of low-income students; implementation strategies will be developed; includes distance learning, special needs learners (i.e older adult learners and students with disabilities), and supervision of instruction and teacher evaluation such as distance learning, gifted strategies, learning through the context of the arts, and mentoring. Implementation strategies will be developed. (Note: Course will be team-taught to enable specific K-12 and community college breakouts.)

 

EDDL 923: Mixed Methods Analysis of Instruction and Learning (3 units)

 

Reviews qualitative and quantitative research methods; includes qualitative problem statements, data collection, and coding of qualitative data; addresses descriptive statistics, table statistics, correlation; students conduct applied small-scale study of a specific teaching and learning problem using quantitative and qualitative techniques.

Category 3: Equity, Diversity, and Structural Inequality (total 3 classes—9 units)

 

EDDL 930: Qualitative Analysis of Race, Class, and Gender in Society and Education (3 units)

 

Presents research on issues of race, class, gender and disability in education in historical and contemporary contexts; emphasizes evidence-based data analysis, specifically qualitative analysis of data; introduces qualitative analysis of data, assumptions, designs, collection, analysis, and research ethics.

 

 

EDDL 931: Quantitative Analysis of Structural Inequality in Education (3 units)

 

Reviews research on issues of structural inequality and education from contemporary and historical perspectives; emphasizes evidence-based data analysis, specifically quantitative analysis of data on equity and achievement gap in education; addresses quantitative methods, descriptive analysis, measurement issues, and research ethics.

 

 

EDDL 932: Transformational Strategies to Address Inequality in Education and Society

(3 units)

 

Discusses research on historical and contemporary responses to inequality in education; includes multicultural education, culture of poverty, single race/sex schools; addresses new trends and strategies affecting equity in education, including immigrants, sexual identity, age, gender, organizations, and special needs learners (i.e older adult learners and students with disabilities). (Note: Course will be team-taught to enable specific K-12 and community college breakouts.)

Category 4: Educational Program Administration (total 5 classes—15 units)

 

EDDL 940: Policy, Law, and the Political Economy of Education (3 units)

 

Reviews public policy processes and legislation related to schooling and education; public financing structures; schooling and school law, including fairness and justice, as well as common problems encountered in districts; special needs learner issues (i.e older adult learners and students with disabilities.)

 

 

EDDL 941: Organizational Accountability and Strategic Planning (3 units)

 

Addresses strategic planning processes, development of performance and institutional effectiveness measures, including California education accountability structures and introduction to program evaluation, incorporating quantitative and qualitative data.

 

EDDL 942: Budgeting and Financial Management (3 units)

 

Budgeting and financial management in public education; understanding budget as a manifestation of mission, goals, and application of equity at district level; emphasizes quantitative budget analysis skills and data presentation; financial management systems, focus on information technology resources, special needs learner impacts (i.e older adult learners and students with disabilities.)

 

 

EDDL 943: Application of Budgeting, Financial Management, and School Law (Budgeting Mentorship) (3 units)

 

Site-based, supervised independent study involving problem-posing and data collection to examine district-level budgeting, financial management, fundraising, and school law issues; features mentorship and a problem-based approach.

 

 

EDDL 945: Communication Strategies and Techniques in Educational Leadership (3 units)

Review research in communication styles and techniques with emphasis on cross cultural communication; training in public communication techniques and analysis and improvement of communication styles; use of technology, communication with public media, and date presentation.

Category 5: Research Activities (total 4 classes—12 units minimum)

 

EDDL 950: Dissertation Literature Review: Synthesis and Critique of Research (3 units)

 

Application of research design and data analysis through review of published research; includes review and critique of research designs; develops literature review for dissertation, addressing journals, data bases, and research resources, synthesis of articles, citations, human subjects protections, and plagiarism, data integrity issues, and ethics.

 

EDDL 951: Dissertation Research Design (3 units)

 

Reviews research designs such as case studies, ethnographies, focus groups, survey research, correlational, experimental, and quasi-experimental; describes application of research designs to program evaluation; students develop methodology chapter of dissertation.

 

EDDL 952: Field-Based Residency (3 units)

 

Focuses on collecting data for dissertation; includes mentorship and leadership seminars with current school leaders.


EDDL 998: Dissertation Seminar (3 units, repeatable for credit)

 

Independent student research leading to the completion of the doctoral dissertation; includes dissertation support seminar for sharing and critique of preliminary research findings; may be repeated for a total of 12 units.
