An Alumni Message from the Dean

Dear Friends:
I am pleased to present you with the College of Education’s spring 2008 newsletter, as it will inform you of the latest and greatest happenings at the College.
In this edition you will learn that our faculty continue to work hard in providing an excellent educator preparation program. We are also conducting research on important issues affecting education and developing new programs to more clearly define what it takes to succeed in today’s classrooms as well as understanding the political realities of education. Read about a new and exciting summer study abroad program the College has established with Hong Kong University and for which the College has received scholarship support from a grant from Mr. Chris Larson.
We have successfully launched our new Doctor of Educational Leadership with 16 doctoral candidates now in their second semester. We are in the process of reviewing applications for the second cohort to be admitted to begin their studies in fall of 2008.
One of our College traditions is the Golden Torch Awards, the College’s signature event that honors the contributions our alumni have made to the nation’s educational landscape. After reading about the outstanding alumni that received this honor last year, I hope you will be inspired to join your fellow alumni as we celebrate this year’s recipients on may 3 in the Student Union in Jack Adams Hall.
But the story does not end with the College. The story continues with you. We need your support. Here’s how you can help: Show your SF State Alum spirit. Attend events we offer to our alumni. Consider giving to the College of Education, which will provide more support for outreach programs like the ones you’ll read about within these pages. In fact, on of the newest additions to our website is the online feature which enables alumni to support their favorite department within the College ( www.sfsu.edu/~coe/ ). You may also send a gift now by filling out the form provided on page four.
